SOPA and PIPA
Alright, seeing as no posts concerning this have come up, I'll just make one myself
SOPA, Stop Online Piracy Act, and PIPA, the Protect Intellectual Property Act are two pieces of american legislacion that would allow them to severely fuck with the core structure of the internet
For one, it would allow them to DNS block any website from ISPs within the states. This is essentially the same method has the one employed by China, know as the Golden Wall.
Secondly, it would allow for the cutting of funds and adds to companies located within the states, and to the shutdown of USA hosted servers
And worst of all, the power to do so would be placed in the hands of the major companies, such as the MIAA and other similar companies.
I cannot stress how BAD this is. It is essentially internet censorship and the destruction of one of the things that makes the internet beautiful. The freedom of expression: Furthermore, it will not stop internet piracy, as there are ways to circumvent the DNS block. It only blocks domains (the name) and using the IP you can still access the site. It is essentially though, going to stunt business models that utilize the digital distribution capacity of the internet
And if you MUST fight piracy (which in of itself is something I defend for various reasons but are not called for here), support the OPEN act, proposed by congressmen Issa (a far more acceptable bill. I don't know the exact details however)
Now how can you fight this? Phone or contact your local politicians. Not just in american. Foreigns too. Facebook groups, twitter, the works. As you know, Wikipedia went black last January the 18th in protest. The SOPA bill hearings was postponed for February, but it's not dead
At the same time, it is a perfect chance to push back the numerous censoring legislation put in place. The already in place laws were enough for them to take down Megaupload (although, there are other factors here, and the people in charge fucked up by taking advantage of the piracy potential of their own site)
So yeah, fight this thing. Go to youtube for links on exactly what it entails
http://americancensorship.org/
Here's a site for general information
Remember, people shouldn't be afraid of their government. The government should be afraid of their people
Unless you want a distopian future ruled by corporations and corrupt politicians, start fighting back

Re: SOPA and PIPA
I don't know if it's true, but I've heard rumor that like Wikipedia, Sony is also in protest against this. Don't know why they would be though, maybe Anonymous is threatening to hack PSN again if Sony doesn't go against it. Now if they could get Microsoft on board to. Should be adding pretty good support for protestors.

Well, I was planning to make one but then I was sure many would say that I am overreacting to it with my known paranoia; and that none would agree with it; so I decided not to, plus with what has been going on lately.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
Sony supports SOPA
The only major company I know of against SOPA are VALVE (guys that did Team Fortress, Portal, Half Life and run the Steam platform)
And Tlaloc, this is not paranoia. This is reality. This what they want to do. Censor the internet and give us their lame model of how distribution of media should be done
A model created years ago, even before fucking CASSETTE PLAYERS
A business model they've fought tooth and nails to keep because it puts the money not in the hands of the musicians, artists, directors, writers and actors, but in the hands of the distribution companies
And this is also why I support piracy. Because it's a rebellion and a revolution against those companies.
I have the full discography of a band called Abney Park...because they have their own site and distribute their own music, no middle man. And I do this for whatever band or artist does the same thing
But I refuse to give my money to producers and corporations.

Well... I am against SOPA and PIPA (Soup and Pipe respectively in Spanish). But I think it is OK if we pirate things for ourselves or to give it to others. I am not looking to get profit out of piracy.
Here in Mexico, pirate stands operate in board daylight; and the profit goes to organized crime.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
ACTA's pretty old news
Not that it should get any less coverage mind you. There's even already a thread about it
But this is good news. If Obama signs ACTA, the Americans are going to get into the protesting. European's alone wouldn't have enough power

Re: SOPA and PIPA
Great post Lol!!!
To me this is among the very top 3 most de-evolving things that humanity has ever done...and I am not exaggerating.
Even the artists and producers of the music/movies/software themselves believe that they will get less profit because they will simply be less promoted which indirectly leads to less customers...And they are right, because seriously, how many of you would ever by the darn music album or even find out a particular music band if it wasn't promoted and available on youtube/megaupload/other sites??? Same about movies, software, games etc.
So why on earth did they do that? WHAT ARE THEY THINKIIIIING!!!!!!!!???? If this keeps up I hope people will make a big street protest all over the world...because this is seriously getting ridiculous.

If this act does go into effect. do not underestimate the human race, people will find a loop hole around i swear it. We're stubborn like that. there are people who could hack the Government and crash their whole server but wouldn't dare if not for the knowledge of what would come. But trust me when i say there i always a way.

Yes sure! I absolutely agree...no matter how helpless it may seem, I also agree that there is ALWAYS a way!Godsend wrote:If this act does go into effect. do not underestimate the human race, people will find a loop hole around i swear it. The question is will people be unanimous enough and actually do something and find a way...? I hope and believe we will! I for one know that I will certainly! So please spread that petition wherever you can, this is really getting serious, and many people still don't realize it.

I stated there's an easy way around the stupid bill. It's not going to hurt the individual
This is an attempt at protecting a business model by destroying a newer model that shifts profits from the hands of the media mafia.
Dude to exams and my own shit, I haven't been up to date on this...and it's 07:30am and I spent the night awake.
But soon as I can, I'll get information on where we currently stand with this
