The Omnitrix, short for omni-matrix, is an alien device which attaches to the user's wrist. in Created by Azmuth, the Omnitrix was intended to allow beings to experience life as other species in order to foster peace in the universe. According to Vilgax, the Omnitrix is supposed to be the ultimate weapon.

The Omnitrix looks like a wristwatch, primarily black and grey in color, with a gray(or black) dial in the middle(like a watch face) which has a green hourglass shape (actually the intergalactic "peace" symbol, also on Plumber's badges and Azmuth's homeworld) on it. The inside of the hourglass shape glows in different colors at special moments.

The Omnitrix's main function is that it acts as a wireless receiver for the Codon Stream, Azmuth's DNA database on Primus. By accessing the Codon Stream, the Omnitrix rewrites the wearer's DNA on a quantum level and transforms them into one of the 1,000,910 other species in the Codon Stream (excluding the wearer's species). In order for the host to change size, matter is created from energy or reconstituted to energy as needed.

It has two known display modes: The mode seen in the original series provides a black silhouette of the desired alien and the mode the recalibrated form uses provides a dark-green hologram of the alien. By Changing the Settings the user can use whichever mode they so choose.

Green - Active/Recharge Mode : The default Omnitrix mode, when the alien selection interface can be used. Also when there is no time left, it beeps, before turning the user back to their regular form.

Red - S.D.M. Modality/Radiation Detector: When the Omnitrix was set to S.D.M.(Self-Destruct Mode) it is enough energy to destroy the entire universe. However the user can use vocal commands to decide to the size and range of the explosion. This mode also has a timer, allowing timed explosions. Also when Radiation is detected the Omnitrix dial flashes red. When in this mode, a distress signal is sent out, this also allows nearly anyone to find the Omnitrix.

Yellow-Scan Mode: When the Omnitrix is locked to a certain set of aliens, new aliens can be unlocked through contact with a member of that species. This simply unlocks the DNA in the Codon Stream, although the Omnitrix also has the capability to capture new DNA. This is done in two ways actually imprisoning said being in the omnitrix, transporting them to the Codon Stream, or simply scanning them, and adding a duplicate of their DNA into the Codon Stream.

Reset Mode: When the Omnitrix is in Reset Mode, the user can change various things such as color interface, add a timer, create a feedback to anyone if needed, send information to Azmuth, add timer, turn off the command codes, turn on the command codes, or master control, scan the proximity of new alien DNA, and even stop the SDM mode for destroying the Universe.This Mode includes taking off the Omnitrix, and a new language. Only people who have great knowledge about the Omnitrix know how to activate this mode fully, and it is possible that Ben knows too as well as Albedo and Azmuth. This mode can be accesed by the voice command Omnitrix Reset Mode Code 10 or pressing and holding the Omnitrix dial while a desired alien for 2 seconds.

-The Omnitrix also alters its shape and size to accommodate the wearer's size. When in alien form, it appears on the alien's chest, because some aliens lack wrists, and by pressing the symbol you can change into another alien form.
-When near its creator Azmuth, it has been shown to pin-point the direction to reach him by turning its dial.
-The Omnitrix has Artificial Intelligence (AI).
-If someone tries to tamper with it against the host's will, it creates a large feedback pulse for defense.
-The Omnitrix can supercharge other technology, and power it down/deactivate it.
-The Omnitrix can show a database image of all aliens available at the time, or show a database image of aliens that escaped the Omnitrix. The images of the aliens in the Omnitrix are shown in green. While the escaped ones are shown in black.
-The Omnitrix can create a map hologram, which is similar to the one in Plumber badges.
-The Omnitrix has a 2-way communication system with Plumber badges.
-The Omnitrix has a Universal Translator (translates alien languages and writing to the wearer's language). Dwayne This presumably also explains how so many aliens seem to be able to speak English upon first meeting them (unless the majority of alien species already speak English).
-The Omnitrix can teleport the user through Azmuth's teleportation channel.
-There is a particular method used to safely remove the Omnitrix, and the owner can use it. It involves a code that the wearer of the Omnitrix tells it with voice activation(Decouple Omnitrix Command Code: 000 Release Coupling 0).
-During reconstitution (transformation) all information on the alien is dumped into the user's mind.
-When suffering from EM interference, the Omnitrix can cause unintentional transformations, and the Omnitrix will be unable to deactivate until the source of the interference is gone.
-As revealed by Azmuth in Primus, the Omnitrix does not actually contain any DNA sample. It simply acts as a wireless device, connecting itself to the artificial planet, Primus, where Azmuth has gathered the DNA of almost all the sentient species of the galaxy in the Codon Stream. When activated, the Omnitrix accesses the Codon Stream's information and applies it to the host. Without Primus, the Omnitrix would be completely useless. When in danger, Primus can send a distress call to the Omnitrix, which teleports to Primus with its host in order to protect the planet.
-The Omnitrix is able to restore the DNA of DNAliens, and repair any form of genetic damage.. This funcation can be used to to eliminate the foreign DNA from a being and it can change hybrids such as Manny and Helen back to their human forms. It can also take genetic material such as taking someone's sight, and implanting it in another host.
-The Omnitrix is able to change the user into any alien the user chooses, and restore the DNA of any sentient being. This can be used to revive species, or revive the deceased.
-The Omnitrix can fuse DNA such as Daimondheadm, and Grey Matter. You can also fuse others with different DNA, combining a human with a dolphin, and alerting DNA converting a human into an ant.
-With the Master Code you can control all the functions with vocal commands or thoughts,You can also trigger the functinos with physical contact, energy pulse's, or mental concentration.
