How did you used to pronounce names...

...of characters before you found out how they were really pronounced? Here's mine;

Ling Xiaoyu - Prounounced "Lin-Shee-Ow-You"
Nikku's pronunciation - Ling Ex-Ix-Oo

Then I finally listened to the announcer and got it right.

Reno - Pronounced "Ree-Noh"
Nikku's pronunciation - Reh-Noh

Then I watched Advent Children and got it right.

Zidane - Pronounced "Zih-Dahn"
Nikku's pronunciation - Zih-Dayne

Then I played Dissidia... decided ZidAHne sounded weird and just kept calling him ZidAYne!

Tidus - Prounounced (apparently) "Tee-Dus"
Nikku's pronunciation - Tie-Dus

Then I played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 and its pronounced TEEdus in the firt game and my way in the second game. I still call him TIEdus however, because it has Tide in it and it fits with the water theme of FFX. TEEdus sounds too much like Tedious and it sounds weird.

Amadeus - Pronounced "Ah-Mad-Ey-Us"
Nikku's pronunciation - Ah-Med-Ius

Then I watched the Arnie movie Last Action Hero and finally got it right.

Rukia Kuchiki - Pronounced "Roo-Key-A Koo-Chee-Key"
Nikku's pronunciation - Roo-Key-A Koo-Key-Chee

Then I heard it being pronounced differently whilst watching Bleach and found out that I had somehow swapped the Chi and Ki in her name around!

Justin Chatwin - Pronounced "Styoo-Pid Prih-Ck"
Nikku's pronunciation - Just-In Chat-Win

Luckily I only mispronounced Stupid's name wrong once and that was when I first saw him.

Son Goku - 'Soan Goku'
-My old pronunciation - Sun Goku

Saiyan - 'Sigh-an'
- My old pronunciation - Sayan

Ryu - Reeyoo
-My old pronunciation (when I was like 5) - Righ-yoo

Sagat - Suh-got
-My current pronunciation (and the announcer for Turbo HD) - Saggot

Kuchiki
- Kooch-kee

Oh yeah, put me down for the Reeyoo/Raiyoo one too!

there are no long vowels in Rukia Kuchiki so it`s pronounced exactly as it`s written, i.e. you`re doing it wrong, same with all japanese names

oh yes. Every mom says Naruto like "nar-u-do" or "na-taru"

hmmm...I know I still say manga wrong. it's supposed to be like "mon-ga", but I say it how it's written, almost like "main-ga", but I've been saying it wrong so many years that I can't say it right, it just sounds weird. It would be like if you tried to switch from saying toaster to "toss-tur", it just feels weird because it's not what I'm used to. So I fail.

Some words I just couldn't say until I heard them. I remember reading "tsunade" before she was on naruto, and I didn't know how the hell to say it. I said it like "sunday" lol

also, wrong again, ru-ki-a, kya is a whole different thing, きゃ- it`s written like so, while this - きあ - is kia, each vowel has to be pronounced in japanese, the same with jessica`s thing, ma-n-ga, it`s not mon-ga, nor is it main-ga, but she`s right about pronouncing as its written, it`s just that she`s not doing it xD

Yeah there language has like 180 sounds and they all sound the same in everyword while american had like 8,100

you`re right about the end part, but again, you can`t omit the u, and add a "c" before "k" - sa-ku-ra, then again, any word that hasn`t got a long vowel would be pronounced short, and sakura is no exception...

I usually pronounce manga as 'Mayn-ga' just because it sounds weird in English, but sometimes I say monga.

I also always put the emphasis on the first syllable of Goku's name. I know Goku is supposed to be pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable like 'GoKUU', but it's just one of those words/names that sound natural when you put the emphasis on the second syllable in Japanese but it just sounds ridiculous, unnatural, and pretty annoying in English.

ha! language barrier, creating unsettling misunderstandings once again. in english the difference between "k" and "ck" doesnt exist. and in japanese "ck" just doesnt exist anyway (i think...) but ur saying if a japanese phonetic word spelled with a "ck" would be pronounced different if the "c" wasn't there. i get it, but the pronunciation difference is so slight that to any english-first-languagers there wouldnt seem to be a difference.

another thing is nikku knows that we know wut he means when he types sumthin a certain way... im not sure ur familiar with mr. nikku...

what you don`t seem to understand is that you can`t romanize japanese words any way you like, "ck" doesn`t exist in japanese, nor does "k" as an individual letter, hence my correction - sa-ku-ra. One other thing, though english isn`t my first language a far greater level of its usage than what`s being displayed here is required for me to be even remotely confused.
And I don`t need to be familiar with someone to know when they`re wrong; nor do I care if someone else "knows what they mean", a mistake is a mistake.

damn, u aint gotta get all defensive. im jus sayin that we may spell things incorrectly just so the ppl we're talkin to understands what we're sayin, it doesnt always matter if the spelling is correct or not, more that what we're saying is communicated clearly. i kno u cant pronounce sumthin the way u want to pronounce it n expect everyone to understand but u can pronounce anything the way u want to no matter if the reason is as immature as u like how it sounds better when pronounced a certain way. soooo yea...

And that way of thinking is very appropriate if you like being illiterate. You can`t pronounce anything any way you want, that`s why there are rules, and if you don`t wanna offend the people whose language you`re using, and if you wanna be understood at all, you`ll learn them.

of course ur not gonna pronounce something wrong if its in a language that ur just learning, thats retarded, theres already a bit of a language barrier, making urself harder to understand by pronouncing things the way u want is just gonna confuse things more, but that doesnt mean u cant do it in the language ur fluent in. besides language is all about communication, ur technically never wrong if the person ur talking to understands you
