Why live action anime movies suck, and how to make it better.
This was done 3 months before dbe
A Japanese cartoon known as Anime has been widely known around the world, especially having an impact in the United States. Anime is known for its "cartoon physics" humor, adult situations and most commonly its over-exaggerations. Even though anime is an animation it’s not all for kids, which breaks the concept in American culture of cartoons being for kids. Japanese anime has been successful in America for quite some time with cartoons such as Gundam, Poke’mon, Sailor Moon, "Transformers" speed racer , Mega-man, Dragon Ball, and more.
So you see Japan has made quite a profit with anime, giving Americans the question, can Americans make a successful live action movie by showing a wider audience and still make a profit. Some would say yes to that idea of a live action anime movie, and others would say no. there are many reasons why people would say no or yes to the whole idea. Some would say making a live action cartoon takes away the imagination of being a cartoon. Others would say by making a cartoon a live action movie brings “realisticisam” to the cartoon, making it more believable to imagine yourself in. There have been American cartoons that were made into live action movies and did very well such as Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, The Incredible Hulk.
The reason why they did so well as a live action movie was because they’re American cartoons and American cartoons tend to have a more realistic environment rather than anime, so it makes it a lot easier to make in to a live action movie. Most anime is nothing like American cartoons, it is usually in an unrealistic environment with unrealistic situations. Anime expresses internal emotions of a character, visually by using "cartoon physics". For example when a character is shocked, stunned or surprised they would usually perform a “face falt” in which they show an expression that is exaggerated. When anime characters are angry, they show an unrealistic vain in their foreheads, sometimes above the forehead to express how angry they are. When embarrassed they produce a big “sweat- drop” on the side of the forehead. Male characters will develop a bloody nose when aroused by attractive women; mainly the characters who perform this are in-mature and funny males.
In some anime when fighting characters, their ability are over-exaggeratedby how high they jump or how complex the fight is. While holding a conversation at the same time…. So you understand how hard it would be to make an anime into a live action movie, it’s not impossible but hard.
Now you understand why it can be very hard to make a live action anime, and why some people hate that it’s being mad. As I said before some anime are not for kids. So what America does is censor’s all the “bad” things and makes it for young viewers from (6-12), because America doesn’t think that cartoons are for older viewers from (13- and up) and theirconcepts are cartoons are not for kids. Anime tends to have big talking monsters, gigantic robots and other outrages things on different planets; it is very easy to draw on paper but very hard and expensive to make a movie out of it.
American’s have the money to make an anime film live action, but the question is who are they targeting and what kind of adaptations would they have to make in order for it to sale in the U.S? Usually for a wide audience from 13-and up. You may think isn’t that contradicting what they do by censoring the “bad” stuff and making anime for kids. America understands that most people from (13-and up) will not watch a cartoon, but they would see a live action of the cartoon, if it’s good, like transformers for example. Unfortunately they are not targeting the American fans who have watched the anime and support it by making “everything the same” because their too small of a group for America to just target them, that’s how you know it’s about the money. So what America does is try to show a fresh new wider audience by “Americanizing” the live action anime. In order for a live action anime to be successful in America, there needs to be some adaptations for the film. Such as taking “anime humor” out of the film, taking things out that would look ridicules in real life ect. They should still keep the idea of the anime story because if they don’t then there’s no point in making the film. For example transformers the anime became a live action movie and was very successful in America. The reason why it did so well in America was because it was adapted for an Americans audience.
To tell you the truth transformers the anime was one of the easier anime to make into a live action movie. Seeing the success of the live action movie got people questioning, can America make another successful live action anime movie? Well we will see soon enough, a very popular anime called Dragon Ball is going to be a live action movie that is coming soon and people are already talking about it. Some people are upset that the fact there is a live action movie, because Dragon ball is so unrealistic it would look ridicules if it were made into a live action movie no matter what they do. Unsurprisingly enough some people are upset at the choice of the casts and how the movie is set up. Another reason why it is hard to make a live action movie is because choosing an actor or actress can be easy or hard depending how you look at it. Anime faces are drawn very simple with, light skin, half circled shaped eyes separate down the middle, L shaped nose and small mouths, showing almost no ethnicity, giving you the concept that anyone actor or actress can play the part as long as their light in skined and look somewhat like the simple anime character.
That’s not the case because for some people, they think the fact that anime is from Japan all the anime characters are Japanese and should be played by Japanese people in a live action movie. Anime characters often have a verity of different color hair and eyes, assuming that all anime characters are not Japanese. In Dragon Ball the main character is named Goku, being played by a white person named Justin Chatwin. Some people are upset at the fact that a white person is playing Goku for the live action movie. And others think it’s a great idea because it shows diversity. It can be a sign of prejudice on both sides; because people can ether say “he is not Asian,he an alien!” meaning Goku is white like every other superhero in America , or people can ether say “he isn’t Asian?” meaning Goku is a Japanese icon( the Japanese Superman) so he should be played by a Japanese person.
The concept of most American kid’s is that when anime is dubbed into English the American kid’s think that the characters are white by how a character looks, talks, and act not knowing where it originally comes from. That’s why when Americans see Asian people wearing a cosplay form an anime show, for some reason in an American point of view it sometimes doesn’t look like the characters on the show. It’s like if you saw an Asian women dressed up as Snow White in Disneyland, You may not care that the fact she’s Asian, but you would notice she’s an Asian snow white, knowing that Snow White is white. The reason behind this whole thing is that Asian’s aren’t shown enough in American T.V. or films (only kung fu films) and it’s sad. Maybe they're too busy going to college and changing the world. If anime were drawn more detailed around the eyes by separating the eyebrows from the eyes, then anime would look more Asian and we wouldn’t have the problem of choosing an actor or race for a live action movie. I think an anime character should be picked by an actor base on somewhat of the character’s features. Fans that are keeping track of the upcoming film are unhappy with the costumes and how the live action anime is being development. Piccolo is not green enough, master roshi is not bald, from the anime there is no krillin, Tien or chiousu in the film. It’s mainly small things but important things in the movie that fans are upset about. There are many reason why there were changes were done in the movie. To make a realistic atmosphere for the “American” viewers who are watching the movie. Didn’t have enough time or money to have all the cast in the movie. For directors they would want to try something new for the first time, to change people’s aspects. In saying all this I came to an conclusion that It doesn’t matter whether a person is white, Asian or ether another light skinned race as long as that actor or actress performs well. People should stop winning about the actor’s race and focus on what really matters their performance and the plot of the story.
How I felt after seeing the movie….
Dbe Sucks because the plot was not close “ENOUGH” to the original story,
The Actors look nothing like the characters.
Check out a live action casting of dragon ball by mysteriousdoywonder, It's very good.

I stopped watching there. Transformers anime? No, it was animated in Japan. Just cause the animation is Japanese, means not it's an anime. The story, and everything else is America.

VERY NICE! very detailed and nicely said.
And yeah, like I always say - IMHO live action anime was never a good idea, especially the ones from Hollywood where they're gonna tend to make the more "realiiiistiiiic!"(read crapalistic).

Re: Why live action anime movies suck, and how to make it better.
It really pisses me off when a director makes a bad live action movie!!!!! because you guys think it is imposable to accomplish. Remember when we saw those batman anthology Batman the movie, batman returns, batman forever, batman forever, and some of use were like what the hell is this? this is not batman this is George Clooney in a bat suit, and Jim Carry in the Riddler suit...
Arnold as Mr.Freeze.......? ,this is not batman, this is bullshit....... because we knew that this was only about the money, It was sooooo Cliche. In our minds we(smart fans) wanted to see how Bruce became batman, how he trained, how he thought ect. Hollywood thought it would be boring to show how he became batman, People want to see action....
BOY WERE THEIR WRONG.. !!!!
A Genius by the name of Christopher Nolan prove those basters wrong, It is possible to please the fans and a wider(new) audience at he same time.
Because he knew being soo cliche would not work, he knew that bringing big stars would not be enough, he knew a great story would get peoples attention, He knew that being serious about his movie was the key.
James Wong made an anime CLICHE....... !!!??!?!?!? NO AUDIENCE!!!!
he though the dragon ball story line was too complicated for an American audience,
he thought a younger generation would appreciate his sorry ass version more,
HE THOUGHT DRAGON BALL WAS FOR KIDS.............!!!!!!!! BOY WAS HE WRONG:)
kids(2-5) may have liked the movie, but the adults give the reviews, and buy the DVD's
All I'm am saying is don't give up hope on a live action dragon ball movie because of this dumb-ass(James Wong).

You know, my cousin made me proud of him
He saw a commercial for the DVD the other day, and asked if that was Goku, cause he locked nothing like him
My cousins only seen some episodes, and one movie, but he still loves DBZ. I was kinda scared that he would get his formal introduction too it from that sorry ass movie.

Anime Goku has a irrational hatred...alright not exactly irrational, but still pretty effed up hatred of all LAMs
He thinks everything should follow the story exactly or it isn't worth doing.
For him:
X-Men-Sucked
Batman Begins and the Dark Knight: Sucked
Iron Man: It was not that awesome(it was)
Transformers 1 and 2: Sucked
etc etc etc...

I appreciate Nolan's batman because he brought the fans and newer audiences together, That is the directors goal. now newer audience have an idea why Fans love batman so much, It may not have been the perfect Batman to you, Yeah it could have been more dark like Burton's, but it was satisfying on both sides,
It is really hard to satisfy the fan's and gain newer audiences at the same time, Ask James Wong.
I'm guessing the new star track sucked.

The new Star Trek sucked I went back saw the old one the new Star Trek is basically saynig,"F the fans we can do whatever we want! DBE is horrible and Transformers. I don't know what's worse Transformers 2, DBE, or Star Trek. Transformers 2 and Star Trek are a bit worse than DBE. So yeah Star Trek is the worse than Transformers 2 than DBE.

If you actually did a bit of reading and KNEW Star Treck you would know that the producers announced that fans should consider this an alternate universe of the original.
In a show where parallel realities are accepted, it makes sense. Don't try to argue about the characters and everything else. I know my Stark Treck and the movie was freacking awesome. Chris Pine is no William Shatner...but then again who is right?
